PLEASE NOTE: This trip is full. No additional names will be added to the waitlist. This proved incredibly popular with everyone!
Leaders: Carol McCasland, Denver Zoo Docent; and Dave Sutherland
We will visit Denver Zoo, with a behind-the-scenes tour of the Bird Propagation Center. Here rare and critically endangered birds are being reared for preservation of the species. We’ll meet some of the birds in the collection, such as Palm Cockatoos, Bali Mynahs, Red-Crowned Cranes, and others. We will hear how the Denver Zoo manages the eggs they collect from the breeding pairs, and how the chicks are either raised by hand or re-introduced to be parent-raised. This is science in action!
After the behind-the-scenes tour, Carol will lead a tour around the Denver Zoo, The Naturalist will learn how the zoo cares for the animals, many of whom are endangered or critically endangered. There will be a stop at the great apes building to (hopefully) catch of glimpse of the new baby orangutan! Bring a camera or borrow one of Boulder Audubon’s compact digital cameras (please request this with your initial registration to Carol).
Entrance to the zoo is free for each registered Teen Naturalist and one driver. The tour of the Bird Propagation Center is only for the 10 registered Teen Naturalists. Other family members may visit the zoo during this field trip but cannot come on the behind-the-scenes tour, sorry. All are welcome for the docent-led tour after the behind-the-scenes tour.
Limited to 10 Teen Naturalists. Register early to ensure your spot.
Register: Send an email to Carol McCasland to register for this trip (special_event@boulderaudubon.org).
