Join Pam Piombino for a very special evening at her northern Boulder County home. Pam is enamored with moths and attempting to make sense of them. She maintains a Habitat Hero garden, comprised of natives and other local climate-adapted plants. This small oasis in a sea of smooth brome cow grass attracts a large variety of butterflies, bees, wasps, beetles, flies, spiders and of course, many moths. As a bonus, different Families of insects will also be attracted to the special lights.

Of the approximately 180,000 known species of Lepidoptera, only 17,500 are day flying butterflies, making the other 90% moths. Moths are every bit as beautiful as butterflies with intricate patterns and stunning colors. They are extraordinarily diverse with sizes that range from tiny micros to the huge “hawk moths” and can be found in almost every habitat on earth. Pam will talk about their special adaptations to night life, their critical roles as pollinators and a primary food source for bats, birds, spiders, lizards, dragonflies, people and even bears.

The date chosen is during the moonless period of June when the LED and mercury vapor lights are not competing with the moon and therefore, more effective.

This trip is part of the Interludes with Nature field trip series. These trips are led by the area’s most knowledgeable birders and naturalists who take participants to places they wouldn’t often get to see. Monies raised by this important fundraising tool send our Teen Naturalists to birding camps.
