During this field trip, we’ll get back to the basics, no matter if you are a birding beginner or just interested in revisiting some basics of identification. While enjoying the birds on the ponds and in stream-side habitat near the CU Boulder–East Campus, we’ll go over important skills for enjoying birding:
use of binoculars and spotting scopes (*use of spotting scopes will depend on COVID considerations at the time of the field trip).
using bird books & bird ID apps
key characteristics for helping to sort one bird from another — it is not just about colors!
Loaner binoculars are available for participants without binoculars. Please let the trip leader know you want the binoculars with your RSVP. Families are welcome.
Where to meet: Meet at the junction of the Boulder Creek Path and the Skunk Creek Path just north of the National Solar Observatory (Lot 544) on the CU Boulder–East Campus. Please note the pin in the map above is NOT located at this junction, which is nearer the ponds. The field trip location is convenient to the JUMP bus stops. Bike racks can be found near the National Solar Observatory and SEEC buildings. If you choose to park in the CU-Boulder parking lots, please pay attention to lot-specific parking regulations and make sure that a permit is not needed for Sunday.
